Repparfjorden is still alive!

Even more so than before. It took many years before the fjord had time to recover at least some of its power. After the previous copper mine on the site was shut down 1987 the local people has been living with the negative consequences from this Lmining. But we do know that the whales have actually come back, along with an entire ecosystem of life. We saw this with our own eyes. The locals told us to look for aggregations of birds over the surface of the water to find them. With wide eyes, we watched as two whales blew clouds of salt water, and splashed their fins, surrounded by at least six jumping dolphins. As one and the same organism, they moved across the fjord. Life heals and grows back if we just let it.

Copper mines are horrible things. They create waste containing extremely toxic substances. Some of the world’s most potent nerve toxins for example. Now they want to dump these toxic metals straight into the fjord on an even larger scale. Don’t they have any sense in their heads?

Two years ago, a 100-day long occupation took place at Repparfjorden to prevent Nussir from being able to start the misery. This led to both a large investor withdrawing from the agreement and the building permit being revoked. Since then, the mining project has been at a standstill.

Again: had it not been for this civil disobedience, the mine would probably be in full action right now.

But the battle is not yet completely won. It remains to be seen what will happen, but so far there doesn’t seem to be any activity from the mining company on site right now anyway and maybe not this year either.

But as we all understand, it is far from just this copper mine that is destroying the conditions for life in Norway. Around the campfire, we hear about fish farms, oil extraction, wind power installations, the expanded infrastructure…
